EC2 centos 5.2 ami from VMWare vmdk files - crib notes

Recent I was tasked with looking at how I could scale our current infrastruce onto Amazons EC2 under high load. I decided that although there where ALOT of different flavours of community ami's on offer I would really like to roll my own as this would give me total control what was and wasn't installed.

The route I choose was it create a Centos 5.2 VMWare image then convert it to an ami using the amzon tool library. This created larger ami images but seemed to be the quickest and easiest way to do it. Below I have outlined the steps I took.

Step 1: Create vmware image of Centos 5.2

here I found that a I needed to create a single logcial vol of around 2.5 GB in order to install a base image of centos 5.2 deselecting all options except for the base install as we can install these later and you can create volumes on EC2 that you can attach as well to save space. After you've installed everything else you want shutdown the virtual machine in preparation for conversion to raw format

Step 2: Convert vmdk files to raw format

I used QEMU to convert the imges to raw format, if you haven't got this installed you can grab it from qemu or yum, ports etc. The command I ran was:

qemu-img convert -O raw [vm vmdk name].vmdk output.raw

If you have multiple vmdk files you can run:

for file in `ls *.vmdk`; do
echo "qemu-img convert -O raw $file /tmp/$file.raw"
qemu-img convert -O raw $file /tmp/$file.raw
done
cat /tmp/*.raw >> output.raw

Step 3: Bundle and upload to EC2

The next command is to bundle the raw file to an amzon ami format (you can also run the -r option with i386 for 32 bit version images)

ec2-bundle-image -i output.raw -r x86_64 -c cert.pem -k pk.pem --user <amazon user id>

Finally upload the files to a s3 bucket

ec2-upload-bundle -b <bucket name> -m /tmp/image.manifest.xml -a <access id> -s <secret access id>
