A great keynote speech by Dan Brickley who gave insight in the future of how website builders can leverage the power of semantic markup
The main focus was on RDF (Resource Definition Framework) which allows for the definition of relationships and tags within content on your site. Whilst the benefits to end users wont be directly apparent (as context shown within or without RDF tags is the same) the indirect benefit is in search engine spidering and syndication. RDF provides the ability to define specific relationships between entities within pages e.g. A page on you sight that had two links in a normal link relationship a machine could derive no meaning as to the nature of why you have defined this relationship (page 1 linksTo node/234 and page 1 linkTo user/44). In a RDF link relationship a machine would see the explicit relationship and be able to display this to the user in a manner that better defines this e.g. (page 1 isAChildOf node/234 and page 1 hasAuthor user/44).
Drupal is ahead of the game in this case and has a number of modules already developed and offers a great RDF introduction on the concept.
